When choosing lighting fixtures, both professional lighting designers and ordinary consumers will pay attention to the "IP protection level" in the product parameter table. But what exactly does IP rating represent? How does it affect the safety and performance of lighting fixtures? This article provides a detailed interpretation for you.

The origin and definition of IP protection level

The IP (Ingress Protection) protection level system was drafted by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) to assess the protection capability of electrical equipment against external solid foreign objects and water. The IP rating is usually presented in the form of "IP" followed by two digits, such as IP65, IP68.

The first digit represents the level of dust prevention and foreign object intrusion prevention, ranging from 0 to 6;

The second digit represents the level of waterproofing and moisture resistance, ranging from 0 to 8.

The larger the number, the stronger the protective ability. This grading system provides a unified selection basis for lighting designers, engineers, and users, ensuring that lighting fixtures can operate reliably in specific environments for a long time.
